In response to H5N1 cases reported in neighboring states such as Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa, the Nebraska State Fair has taken proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of participating dairy cattle and fair attendees. According to the Board, there have been no reported cases of the virus in Nebraska to date.

Dr. Roger Dudley, State Veterinarian, in collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, has recommended mandatory milk testing for all lactating dairy cattle. To participate in the fair, cattle must test negative for the H5N1 virus within a week before arriving at the event. This precaution is aimed at preventing the transmission of the virus, safeguarding the health of the cattle, and ensuring the smooth running of dairy exhibitions at the fair.

These measures reflect the Nebraska State Fair’s commitment to maintaining high standards of animal health and public safety while allowing agricultural showcases to continue as planned.
