In a strategic move likely to impact household budgets ahead of the festive season, the Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) announced a wholesale price increase of Rs 2 per litre for buffalo milk, effective September 1. The decision was unanimously approved during a general body meeting held on Wednesday, according to MMPA General Secretary Kasham Kashmere.

This price adjustment will see the cost of buffalo milk rise from Rs 87 per litre to Rs 89 per litre, with the new rate to be maintained for six months before a scheduled review. The hike comes at a time when demand for milk and milk-based products is poised to surge during the upcoming festivals, including Ganeshotsav, Navratri, and Diwali.

C.K. Singh, a member of the MMPA Executive Committee, stated that the increase in wholesale prices is expected to push retail prices to as high as Rs 98 per litre in certain areas, depending on local demand. This marks the second price hike within a year, following a previous increase from Rs 85 to Rs 87 per litre. The cumulative effect of these increases is likely to exert additional pressure on the budgets of middle-class and low-income families.

The MMPA attributes the price hike to rising costs associated with maintaining milch animals, with prices for feed and other inputs such as dana, tuvar, chuni, and hay experiencing a 20-25% increase. The decision also follows a trend observed among cow milk producers in Maharashtra, who recently implemented a similar Rs 2 per litre price hike.

Mumbai's daily consumption of buffalo milk exceeds 5 million litres, with over 700,000 litres supplied by MMPA through its extensive network of dairies and local retailers. While the association had previously refrained from raising prices during the February-March 2024 period due to the Lok Sabha elections, the current increase is expected to set a precedent for further adjustments by other milk producers, thereby intensifying the financial strain on consumers in the months ahead.
