Mumbai Buffalo Milk Prices to Rise by Rs 2/Litre Starting September 1

The Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) has announced a Rs 2 per litre increase in the wholesale price of fresh buffalo milk in Mumbai, effective September 1, 2024. This decision, made during a general body meeting, will raise the price from Rs 87 to Rs 89 per litre, with retail prices expected to rise to between Rs 93 and Rs 98 per litre, depending on locality and demand.

The price hike is set to last for six months, after which it will be reviewed. This marks the second increase in a year, following a similar Rs 2 rise in 2023. The MMPA attributed the hike to rising costs for milch animals and feed, which have increased by 20-25%.
This increase, coming just before the festival season, is likely to impact the prices of all milk-related products, affecting domestic budgets, especially for middle-class and low-income families. The city consumes over 5 million litres of buffalo milk daily, with the MMPA supplying around 700,000 litres through various channels. The price hike is expected to trigger similar increases in cow milk prices as well, further straining household finances.
