Miraka, a prominent sustainability-focused company in New Zealand, recently underwent a planned succession in its governance structure.
Miraka Bids Farewell to Founding Leaders and Welcomes New Board Members
Founding Directors Kingi Smiler, Maxwell Parkin, and Mai Kieu Lien, dedicated 12 years of service to Miraka and have stepped down from the Board during the recent annual general meeting, having reached the maximum term as per the company's constitution.

Kingi Smiler, the founding Chairman and a driving force behind Miraka's establishment, played a pivotal role as the Chairman of Wairarapa Moana, a cornerstone shareholder in the business.

Under Kingi's leadership and with the support of fellow Board Members, Miraka was established in 2010, evolving into a global player with exports to over 25 countries. Miraka is also recognized as the world's first dairy processor powered by renewable geothermal energy, establishing itself as a global low-carbon leader.

Karl Gradon, Miraka's Chief Executive, emphasizes, "This commitment to environmental responsibility aligns with our Te Ao Māori value of kaitiakitanga, producing high-quality products in an environmentally responsible manner."

Miraka, proud to be one of New Zealand's largest Māori export businesses with $300 million in exports, acknowledges the instrumental role of the founding Directors in the company's success and growth.

"We extend our sincere gratitude to Kingi Smiler, Maxwell Parkin, and Mai Kieu Lien, wishing them continued success in their future endeavors," says Mr. Gradon.

Looking forward, Miraka is pleased to welcome new leaders to the Board—Te Horipo Karaitiana and Truc Le Quang Thanh, appointed by Wairarapa Moana, and Vinamilk from Vietnam respectively. Nigel Atherfold has also been appointed as an Independent Director.

"The wealth of experience in agri-business that our three new Directors bring is a significant asset for the Miraka whānau," notes Mr. Gradon.

These new additions join existing Board members Bruce Scott and Debbie Birch, who remain on the Board following their appointments in December 2022 and March 2023, respectively.

Mr. Scott has been elected as the new Chairman during the new Board's inaugural meeting following the AGM, marking a positive step towards the future for Miraka.
