Higher dairy prices for consumers and fewer farmers.

In recent developments affecting the dairy industry in New South Wales, farm gate milk prices have not met expectations, posing potential challenges for local farmers. Opening milk prices for the 2025-26 season range from $12.30/kg of milk solids in northern NSW to $9/kg MS in southern NSW. Mal Holm, a Blighty dairy farmer, noted that while these prices might have been adequate in the past, current economic pressures, including record floods and increased input costs, jeopardize the sustainability of family farms.
"The cost of producing milk is only going up, while milk prices remain down, and proper disaster assistance is still nowhere in sight," he stated. The need for stronger milk prices is echoed across the sector, emphasizing the importance of sustaining local dairy production amidst rising operational costs.
