Michigan and Florida Dairy Checkoffs Unite for Enhanced Promotions

Dairy checkoff programs in Michigan and Florida have officially announced a groundbreaking strategic partnership aimed at increasing dairy promotions across the two states. This collaborative effort seeks to enhance market presence and efficiency in dairy promotion initiatives.

Leading this transition is Melissa Gerharter, CEO of United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM). She assures that Michigan dairy farmers will see no disruption in their current programs. Instead, the combined forces aim to optimize back-office efficiencies and tap into the talents of their staff, ultimately translating to more financial resources directed toward market promotion.

Gerharter elaborates on the potential of this collaboration, particularly in states that consume more milk than they produce. "Deficit dairy states present attractive opportunities for national dairy checkoff promotions," she notes, highlighting Michigan farmers’ desire to extend their reach to broader consumer bases.

The partnership also emphasizes mutual learning and sharing of experiences, especially in STEM outreach, where both regions have made significant strides. Gerharter expresses confidence in adopting Florida's best practices into Michigan's operations, underscoring a harmonious blend of skills and talents.

UDIM and Florida Dairy Farmers will retain their local identities while exploring synergies for future growth. As per the USDA's end-of-year report for 2023, there are 850 licensed dairy farmers in Michigan and 55 in Florida, marking significant potential for collaboration and market expansion.
