Mexico Boosts National Milk Production
Mexico is on the path to becoming self-sufficient in milk production with the unveiling of the Plan de Autosuficiencia de Leche. President Claudia Sheinbaum presented this initiative in Campeche, which includes the construction of a new pasteurization plant with an investment of 140 million pesos.

The plant aims to produce 100,000 liters of milk daily, serving not only Campeche but also Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and eventually Chiapas. The plan also sets a guaranteed purchase price at 11.50 pesos per liter to encourage local producers. Mexico seeks to increase its annual milk production from 13 billion to 15 billion liters by 2030 to decrease reliance on imports.

Officials, including Julio Berdegué Sacristán, head of the Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural, emphasized collaboration with local governments and sectors to double the region's milk production. Recognizing the importance of small and medium-sized farmers, the plan also includes technical support, credit facilities, and infrastructural donations. Additionally, Leche para el Bienestar aims to expand its coverage from 6.3 million to 10 million beneficiaries. These efforts are part of a broader vision to bolster Mexico's food sovereignty.
