Mexican Farmers Demand Fair Milk Prices Amid Rising Costs

Farmers in the Guasave region of Mexico are advocating for a fair price of 15 pesos per liter for raw milk to mitigate the impact of rising input costs. Antonio Gastélum, a farmer from La Esmeralda, explained that transforming milk into artisanal products, such as cheese, allows producers to capture additional value. This artisanal transformation is seen as a financial lifeline amid increasing feed and input costs for livestock.

Direct sales of raw milk within rural communities serve as a crucial source of liquidity for small-scale farmers. Miguel Espinoza, a small-scale producer from La Cofradía, highlighted the importance of daily sales to neighbors, local cheese makers, and artisanal ice cream producers. This local distribution chain not only supports the farmers' income but also caters to the ingrained habit among rural populations of purchasing fresh milk for daily boiling.

Juan Manuel Domínguez, president of the Local Livestock Association of Guasave, emphasized the significant socio-economic impact of milk production in the region. During peak production times, farmers with larger herds can sell around 100 liters daily, earning approximately 1,000 pesos per day. This volume is a primary income source for numerous families engaged in agriculture in the state of Sinaloa.
