Malaysia has lifted its ban on the import of heat-treated milk and dairy products from Germany, following a precedent set by China earlier this month.

The ban was initially enforced by the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety due to a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Germany earlier this year.

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Germany reported that a new veterinary certificate has been approved with Malaysia, a significant market for Germany's dairy exports outside the EU.

Cem Özdemir, Germany’s Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, expressed optimism as Malaysia reopens its market: "After China, Malaysia is the next major market that German companies can now supply with heat-treated milk and dairy products."

The World Organisation for Animal Health has reinstated Germany's FMD-free status without vaccination, except for a zone around the outbreak area in Brandenburg, Berlin.

Özdemir highlighted ongoing efforts: "We are continuing to work hard to ensure that other third countries join us as quickly as possible... The sooner we return to normal trade, the better for our agricultural and food industry." In 2023, Germany exported 38,587 tonnes of dairy products to Malaysia, valued at €60.9 million ($66.4 million).
