A dairy farm in Chapecó, in western Santa Catarina, has combined milk production, artisanal cheese-making and rural tourism. The Malagutti family began producing more of its own milk after collection declined during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The property belongs to Indústria de Alimentos Malagutti, a family business with more than three decades of experience in Brazil’s dairy sector. It now receives visitors who can observe the farm’s production routines and learn how milk is transformed into cheese and other dairy products.

The family expanded its own herd after a pandemic-era disruption reduced the volume of milk it was able to collect. The farm currently has about 80 animals in milk and makes several varieties of cheese and other products on the property.

Milking takes place with a fully automated system using equipment imported from the Netherlands. During guided visits, tourists watch the machinery operate and follow the process by which the milk used in the farm’s products is obtained.

The programme also covers animal management. The family explains measures intended to support the cows’ comfort and welfare, which the producers say affect both productivity and milk quality.

After touring the facilities, visitors take part in a guided tasting of the cheeses and dairy products made there. The family describes each item’s ingredients, characteristics and flavours, and visitors can buy directly from the producer without intermediaries.

The farm is part of Desbrave Chapecó, a municipal programme that brings together rural businesses and promotes tourism in the countryside. The initiative also provides other rural families with opportunities to sell products directly to the public, linking production, processing and visitor activities within the same local chain.
