Madhya Pradesh CM Takes Charge of Animal Husbandry Amid Cabinet Reshuffle

On July 14, 2026, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav assumed direct control of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department, a decision made official through a notification from the General Administration Department. This move is part of a significant political reshuffle in the state cabinet, resulting in the reassignment of Minister of State (Independent Charge) Lakhan Patel to the Anand (Happiness) Department.

The reassignment follows rigorous performance reviews of all state ministries led by Yadav, focusing on progress and execution rates. Patel's department faced scrutiny for not launching planned cow shelters under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, a key developmental priority under the administration's agenda.

The decision to place the livestock and dairy sector directly under the Chief Minister's oversight highlights the strategic importance Yadav's administration places on this rural sector. The aim is to streamline decision-making, expedite pending projects, and eliminate administrative hurdles that have delayed public-private ventures.

This reshuffling marks the second instance in two years where a first-time minister has been reassigned after an internal performance audit by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In July 2024, Nagarsingh Chouhan was reassigned from the Forest Department to the Scheduled Castes Welfare Department following a similar evaluation.

Lakhan Patel, a second-term MLA from the Patharia constituency in Damoh district and a notable OBC leader from the Bundelkhand region, is the latest to experience this shift. This has fueled speculation in Bhopal about a potential broader cabinet reshuffle.

Currently, Chief Minister Yadav oversees 11 key state portfolios, including Home, General Administration, and Industrial Policy. His direct involvement in the dairy and livestock ministry aligns with the state's objectives to modernize the rural economy, enhance livestock welfare, and boost smallholder dairy incomes.

By integrating the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department into the Chief Minister's Office, the state administration is emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards missed targets and prioritizes efficiency in executing agricultural sector plans.
