Müller is negotiating to acquire Vogtlandmilch
Germany’s Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller is discussing a potential acquisition of Vogtlandmilch with the smaller dairy’s management and supervisory board. The possible deal would include Vogtlandmilch’s plant in Plauen, in Saxony’s Vogtland region.
A spokesperson for Müller said that negotiations were under way but cautioned that they remained preliminary. “The discussions are at an early stage. Any potential transaction would also be subject to the necessary competition law approvals,” the spokesperson said. Müller declined to provide further details.
Vogtlandmilch is based in Plauen, near Saxony’s borders with Bavaria and the Czech Republic. The business was founded in 1928 and reports roughly 150 employees at its Plauen site.
The company sources milk from about 150 farms within an 80km radius, covering parts of Vogtland, western Saxony and eastern Thuringia. Its products include quark, ultra-high-temperature milk, butter and buttermilk. They are sold under the Vogtlandweide and Sachsenland names, as well as Joe Clever, which is marketed in local schools.
Information published by Vogtlandmilch says a recent investment modernised its Plauen operation. The project raised bottling and quark-making capacity, while also adding storage space and upgrading infrastructure. The source did not disclose the investment’s value or the resulting production volumes.
Müller runs 20 production locations across Germany, Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland and is one of Europe’s largest dairy companies. In May, it acquired Berief Food, which makes dairy alternatives and tofu. Müller said that purchase strengthened its position in the “dynamically growing market” for plant-based food and beverages. In Germany, the group sells vegan yoghurt and desserts under its own brand. It also bought British kefir producer Biotiful Gut Health last year.
The proposed Vogtlandmilch transaction has not been announced as completed. Its timing, financial terms and any changes to the company’s operations were not disclosed.
