Luxembourg's Dairy Farmers Seek New Partner After Lactalis Exit

The recent termination of a contract by Lactalis has left Luxembourg's dairy farmers in a precarious situation, particularly affecting members of the Prolek cooperative. The cooperative, which comprises 68 farms, held an emergency meeting in Junglinster to discuss the implications and potential next steps. Christophe Ernster, a Prolek member, described the news as a shock, noting the difficulty in understanding its full impact.

During the meeting, Frank Daleiden explained that while the mood was subdued, it remained constructive, with members seeking clarity from the cooperative's leadership. Cooperative president Vic Wirtz emphasized the need for solidarity and the collective search for a new buyer. He highlighted the critical nature of the situation, stating, "This is about the existence of 68 farms. Literally about existence."

Many farmers expressed a preference for partnering with a local dairy company to ensure production remains in Luxembourg. Daleiden noted the importance of joining a cooperative that allows them to have a say in operations. Christophe Ernster also stressed the need for a long-term solution to ensure the financial viability of their operations for future generations.

Prolek members are hoping for flexibility regarding deadlines, drawing parallels to farmers in France who were given two years by Lactalis to find an alternative solution. The cooperative's board is working urgently to secure similar terms in Luxembourg.

On Monday, the cooperative met with Luxembourg's Minister of Agriculture, Martine Hansen, who pledged to explore ways the government could support the affected farmers. Despite the challenges, farmers remain optimistic, underscoring resilience as a necessary trait in their profession.
