The city of Ludhiana in Punjab is facing serious food safety challenges, as approximately 30% of milk and dairy products failed recent quality tests conducted by the district health department. From January to June, 324 food samples were collected, 299 of which were processed. The results showed that 48 out of 158 dairy product samples did not meet safety standards. Paneer topped the list with 28 out of 76 samples failing tests, followed by 7 out of 11 curd samples and 8 out of 34 milk samples. In response, the health department has intensified sampling efforts during the monsoon and festive season to ensure safer consumption.

Dr. Amarjeet Kaur, the District Health Officer, expressed the department's strong commitment to public health, stating, "We have intensified sampling in view of the monsoon and the upcoming festival season. Our focus is to ensure the public consumes safe and hygienic food." Enforcement measures have become more stringent, with 35 cases resolved in the ADC court, resulting in ₹10 lakh in fines. Food safety officers also highlighted operational constraints like limited manpower and resources, emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure to handle increasing safety demands. The high rate of adulteration poses significant risks to consumer health and industry reputation, necessitating urgent action to protect the trust and credibility of Punjab's dairy market.
