Low-Cost Dairy Farms Simplify Milk Production
On the last day of Todo Láctea 2025, low-cost dairy farms that don't necessarily operate on small surfaces were highlighted. Belén Lazzarini and Javier Baudracco, researchers from the National University of the Littoral, advocate a return to pasture-based systems, citing their benefits for profitability and animal welfare. They emphasize that pasture systems support soil health while generating income and provide a socially accepted green system.
"Pasture-based systems reduce risks such as mastitis and infectious diseases, encourage natural animal behavior, and are perceived by consumers as producing healthier dairy products," Lazzarini noted. However, climate challenges such as water and mud, as well as maintaining proper animal body condition, remain ongoing concerns.
In their pursuit of expansion, Nicolás Clutterbuck and his partners now manage 3,600 animals across 4,400 hectares. Their operations focus on pasture, avoiding traditional setups like barns and feeding yards, investing instead in good living conditions and fair wages for staff.
