China's Bright Dairy has announced the appointment of Leon Fung to the Synlait Milk board, replacing former Finance Minister Ruth Richardson. This move is part of Synlait's efforts to recapitalize and manage its debt.

Bright Dairy, Synlait’s largest shareholder with a 39% stake, expressed gratitude for Richardson's two decades of service. "Synlait and Bright would like to thank Ruth for her significant contribution and commitment to the company over the past 20 years," the companies stated. "Her remarkable efforts in the growth and expansion of Synlait from its inception are highly appreciated."
Leon Fung, currently the CEO of NIG Nutritionals, brings over 20 years of experience in the dairy and food sectors to the board. His extensive background includes leadership roles at Danone Nutricia NZ, Winston Nutritionals, Yashili New Zealand, and Anhydro China. Fung also worked with Tetra Pak China and the New Zealand Dairy Board early in his career.
Fung holds a master’s degree in dairy technology from Massey University, New Zealand, and an executive MBA from Fudan University, China. He is actively involved in the New Zealand China Trade Association, New Zealand Asian Leaders, the Institute of Directors New Zealand, and the China Chamber of Commerce New Zealand.
Bright Dairy believes Fung’s extensive experience will be invaluable to Synlait as it navigates its current financial challenges. "Leon will be able to make a significant contribution to the Synlait board with his extensive manufacturing and dairy industry experience," Bright Dairy stated.
This directorial change is effective immediately. Ruth Richardson, a former Finance Minister known for her 1991 "Mother of all Budgets," leaves behind a legacy of significant contributions to Synlait.
