Lakeland Dairies Proposes Expansion of Cavan Plant

Lakeland Dairies is taking a significant step towards expansion as it seeks planning permission for an extension to its dairy processing facility in Co. Cavan.

The cooperative has submitted an application to Cavan County Council, outlining plans for a single-story extension that will include storage, packaging, and dispatch areas, along with a link corridor to the existing production and warehouse building at the Killeshandra site.
The proposed extension also includes a single-story unloading dock extension, a 15m high silo, alterations to the laboratory building, air handling unit (AHU), and the relocation of a transformer. Lakeland Dairies aims to enhance its operational capabilities and streamline processes at the Killeshandra site through these additions.
The cooperative anticipates an increase in milk intake, estimating a rise from almost 170 million liters of whole milk in 2023 to over 201 million liters annually. Despite this growth, Lakeland asserts that the project will not exceed a throughput of 50 million gallons per year, eliminating the need for an Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR).
To accommodate the expansion, approximately 100m3 of additional wastewater will be generated. However, Lakeland Dairies affirms that the increase will be negligible, given the water reduction targets within the factory. The additional wastewater can be managed within the existing wastewater treatment plant, operating under an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) license.
Cavan County Council is set to make a decision on the application by February 27, 2024. This expansion initiative aligns with Lakeland Dairies' broader strategic direction, aiming to maximize operational efficiencies and enhance value-add capabilities for future market requirements. The cooperative has recently announced plans to close three facilities in a strategic move to realign its processing footprint and ensure long-term competitiveness in the dairy industry.
