Lakeland Dairies has met with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, to discuss critical issues facing its farmers, including the nitrates derogation, bovine tuberculosis (TB), and the need to attract young people into the sector.

Chairperson Niall Matthews stressed the importance of retaining the nitrates derogation, calling it "vital and of national importance" for rural economies. He welcomed the establishment of a Cabinet sub-committee on the Nitrates Action Programme, describing it as "real, tangible leadership."
On TB, Matthews acknowledged the minister’s efforts but urged further action, citing the emotional and financial toll of outbreaks on farmers.
Lakeland Dairies also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young farmers, backing initiatives to encourage new entrants into the industry. "We need skilled, committed young farmers to sustain our global leadership in dairy production," Matthews said.
