This deal secures the capacity to export NZ$160 billion worth of primary industry products over the next ten years, providing a significant boost to New Zealand’s economy.
Founded in 2011 by Fonterra and Silver Fern Farms, Kotahi handles Fonterra’s global exports and has been pivotal in managing New Zealand's export logistics alongside Maersk. Anna Palairet, Chief Operating Officer at Fonterra, expressed enthusiasm about the renewed agreement, highlighting its importance for New Zealand’s trade, especially given the recent global supply chain pressures.
Over the past decade, the collaboration between Kotahi and Maersk has proven transformative, shipping 1.8 million TEU or 23 million tonnes of cargo, primarily from sectors like dairy, meat, seafood, horticulture, and forestry. Kotahi CEO David Ross noted that amidst continuous global disruptions due to pandemics, geopolitical tensions, and climate events, this partnership provides much-needed resilience and agility for New Zealand’s trade routes.
The agreement not only reassures New Zealand exporters of stable and reliable shipping services but also marks a commitment to maintaining competitive export capabilities on the global stage. During the height of COVID-19 disruptions, Maersk notably increased vessel capacity and container availability to New Zealand, significantly aiding the local export market.
Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller-Maersk, also reaffirmed the company's dedication to supporting New Zealand’s international trade and enhancing supply chain resilience, anticipating continued success and collaboration in the forthcoming decade.
