Kerala Government Defends Dairy Cooperatives Against Corporate Competition

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared a robust policy to safeguard the state's dairy cooperatives against the incursion of large corporate milk brands. In a state-sponsored event, he highlighted the government's commitment to preserving the local dairy sector as a crucial economic and social priority.

The state’s strategy is centered on maintaining the commercial strength of the Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, known as Milma. The cooperative model is designed to return consumer spending directly to local producers, unlike corporate brands that prioritize profit maximization, potentially destabilizing regional economies.

To support this initiative, the Kerala government plans to expand processing capacities, provide subsidized cattle feed, and improve veterinary services. These measures are intended to reduce operational costs for farmers and enhance milk production, enabling them to compete effectively with corporate entities.

Vijayan emphasized the significant role of village-level cooperatives in supporting hundreds of thousands of farming families. These cooperatives not only manage milk collection but also contribute to rural financial stability and employment, ensuring food security for urban areas.

He urged consumers to prioritize Milma products over corporate alternatives to support local agriculture. This approach by Kerala is seen as a potential model for other regions aiming to protect traditional agrarian systems from corporate dominance.
