Kashmir's Integrated Dairy Development Programme: A New Era of Dairy Farming

Over the past three years, the Animal Husbandry Department has made significant strides in boosting the dairy sector across the Kashmir Valley through the Integrated Dairy Development Programme (IDDP). A total of 4,224 dairy units have been distributed to residents, marking a major step in enhancing local milk production and providing avenues for income generation.

The years 2024-2025 recorded the highest boom in dairy farm establishments, with 2,105 units set up, whereas 419 units were established this year. In the year 2023-2024, 1,700 units were distributed.

District-wise, Kupwara emerged as the top recipient with 122 dairy units in 2025, while Baramulla received the fewest, just 17 units. Notably, districts like Pulwama and Shopian in South Kashmir didn't see any new dairy farms established under the scheme.

Further insights reveal that during 2024-2025, Bandipora, Budgam, and Baramulla emerged as key contributors with 453, 286, and 270 units established respectively. Meanwhile, Srinagar had the least with 61 units. During the previous period, Bandipora also led with 388 farms, while Srinagar remained at the bottom rung with just 34 units set up.

An official from the Animal Husbandry Department emphasized, "The primary objective of this programme is to empower residents of Kashmir to generate their own income by establishing dairy units in their areas." Subsidies are provided to residents post establishment, further aiding in cultivating a sustainable local economy.

The IDDP initiative highlights not only the government's commitment to strengthening the agricultural landscape but also underscores the potential for economic growth and self-sufficiency in the valley.
