Kaliningrad Region Plans to Maintain Food Import Levels

Ministry of Agriculture of the Kaliningrad Region, Artem Ivanov, stated that the region will continue to import food in roughly the same volumes as in the previous five-year period. Most of these imports consist of vegetable products. The minister made this announcement in an interview with TASS at the VIII International Baltic Business Forum 'Business Universe. Time for Creation,' held in Svetlogorsk on October 9-10.

Ivanov noted that the region employs professional farmers and modern equipment, but lacks sufficient sunlight. He estimated that with more favorable conditions, Kaliningrad Region could not only meet its internal demand but also export some of its products.

The authorities are working to attract investors to projects for creating greenhouse complexes. Suitable land plots will be provided for such enterprises; according to the minister, the investment cycle will take at least three years. The region already has potential investors and plans in place.

Vegetable production is expected to grow significantly after these projects are completed. Ivanov stated an increase of at least 10,000 tons, primarily from tomatoes and cucumbers, is expected within three years. Meanwhile, the region already meets its own needs for meat, meat products, and dairy products.

In parallel, the region is increasing its exports of agricultural products. In 2025, exports rose by 4% compared to 2024, placing Kaliningrad Region sixth among Russian regions in terms of export volume. In 2026, for the period elapsed, exports were 13% higher than in the same period the previous year.

Agricultural products account for at least 75% of the region's export volume. About 70% of supplies consist of fat-and-oil products. The export structure also includes fish and fish preserves, which are in demand in Russia and friendly countries. The minister stated that local producers and processors continue to increase sales despite changes in international logistics chains.
