Are you a forward thinking, active dairy farmer with strong communication skills who is keen to champion and represent the UK dairy sector?
Join the NFU Dairy Board – apply to be an appointee member
The NFU is looking for three dairy farmer members to join its national Dairy Board as appointee members to complement and add to the range of existing skills and expertise on the board.

At this pivotal time for the industry, we are looking for members with a strong understanding of the dairy sector who can help drive and develop policy and advocate for UK dairy farmers at a national level.

What to expect

Appointee members serve two-year terms and successful candidates will be expected to attend six board meetings a year, either at NFU HQ in Stoneleigh Warwickshire, at our London office or occasionally virtually or at an external location.

On occasion, appointees will also be asked to attend supply chain, government and NFU meetings as a representative of the board.

Board agendas are wide-ranging and potential applicants must demonstrate a sound understanding and interest in a range of policy and trade issues affecting the dairy industry, as well as a willingness to connect with the wider NFU membership.

Appointee members receive an honorarium, paid monthly, and reasonable expenses are reimbursed. Appointees are given a full induction and offered development and learning opportunities.

Experience and understanding

Appointee members serve two-year terms and successful candidates will have:
  • Active experience of dairy production.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the wider supply chain, including insights into retail, processing and/or consumer behaviour and marketing.
  • An interest in developing trade, animal health and welfare, environmental and farm business policy.
  • Interest in working with the wider Dairy Board on a strategy to improve business performance, business resilience and better promote UK dairy.
  • In line with the NFU’s value of inclusivity, we are interested in applicants from different backgrounds and perspectives, especially those who feel they have been, so far, underrepresented in the agricultural sector
We are also interested in applicants who have specific knowledge of, or an interest in, advocating for organic, tenancy and/or environmental issues.

Key priorities

The NFU Dairy Board has a number of key priorities and work areas, although the board strategy for the next two years will be set by the newly elected and appointed board members. Key areas of focus include:

Establishing fair and transparent supply chains which support sustainable, long-term, and profitable businesses – building on the fair dealing regulations proposed by the government.

Improving farmer representation and co-operation across the supply chain.

Driving UK dairy exports and working with the government and industry to reduce barriers to trade, in line with the NFU’s Dairy Export Strategy.
Championing domestic market opportunities and boosting the public procurement of British dairy.

Ensuring a favourable regulatory and investment environment for British dairy farmers.

Working to promote and defend the interests of the UK dairy sector.

Supporting the NFU’s net zero ambitions and leading the industry’s response to the environmental challenges we face through the UK Dairy Roadmap.
