John Murphy Reappointed as Chairperson of Tirlán
Murphy, who began his tenure on the board in June 2010 and has been farming near Gorey, Co. Wexford, first assumed the role of chairperson in October 2020. Prior to this, he served as vice-chairperson from June 2017 and holds a Diploma in Corporate Direction from University College Cork (UCC).

In related appointments, Gerard O’Brien from Co. Waterford and Thomas Phelan from Co. Laois have been named vice-chairpersons. O’Brien, who farms near Cappoquin and joined the board in June 2018, also boasts a Diploma in Corporate Direction from UCC. Phelan, a newcomer to the board since June 2021, farms near Portlaoise.

Additionally, Tirlán has filled two board vacancies following recent retirements. James O’Brien from Co. Kilkenny and James Finn from Co. Tipperary have been elected as regular board members, succeeding the retiring vice-chairperson Pat Murphy and director Patrick Whyte.

The announcements were made in conjunction with the cooperative’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which took place on Thursday, May 9, in Co. Kilkenny. During the AGM, Tirlán CEO Jim Bergin called on the government to enhance water quality initiatives to support Ireland’s ongoing nitrates derogation efforts. He highlighted the cooperative spirit of Tirlán’s farmers and acknowledged recent governmental pledges towards agricultural sustainability. Bergin emphasized the urgency for the government to activate its National Biomethane Strategy, noting the critical timeline to bolster on-farm biomethane capabilities within the next 18 months.
