Italy has confirmed multiple outbreaks of bluetongue disease affecting sheep, cattle, and even a camel, according to a report by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), as cited by Reuters. Unlike the BTV3 variant that has been spreading rapidly in northern Europe, the Italian outbreaks are attributed to the BTV8 variant.
Bluetongue primarily affects domestic ruminants such as sheep, cattle, and goats and can be fatal. The recent surge in BTV3 cases in northern Europe has prompted extensive vaccination efforts in countries like France. However, Italy's outbreaks of BTV8 were reported on the island of Sardinia, with six sheep, 4,540 cattle, and a camel being affected.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges that European nations face in controlling the spread of different bluetongue variants, with Italy now having to manage a separate strain of the virus compared to its northern counterparts. The outbreaks reinforce the need for continued surveillance and vaccination efforts to prevent further economic and agricultural impacts.
