Iowa farmers want Trump, despite talk of trade wars
Republican farmers in Iowa continue to express support for Donald Trump as their preferred U.S. president, citing the historic sums of money his administration provided to farms. Despite concerns about potential trade wars that could impact already struggling U.S. agricultural exports, Trump remains a favorite among farmers in Iowa. The Trump administration distributed approximately $217 billion in farm payments, including crop support, disaster, and aid programs, during his tenure, a record amount that significantly exceeded any prior four-year period since 1933.

Farmers in Iowa appreciate Trump's financial support, particularly the $28 billion allocated to them after trade wars with China, Mexico, and Canada led to a decline in farm exports in 2018 and 2019. Despite Trump signaling a potential continuation of trade conflicts with China and other partners in his second term, supportive Iowa farmers believe he stood up for agriculture and addressed lopsided trade deals.

While some farmers acknowledge that they didn't love the results of Trump's trade war, they emphasize that it was a necessary step to address unfair trade practices. The prospect of another trade war doesn't concern them, as they believe Trump's approach was in the best interest of American farmers.

A survey commissioned by trade publication Agri-Pulse showed that 39% of 605 farmers would vote for Trump, compared to 19% for Republican challenger Ron DeSantis and 8% for President Joe Biden. Despite concerns about trade upheaval, many Iowa farmers appreciate Trump's advocacy for agriculture and are willing to endure challenges if he continues to support their interests.
