Indonesia has announced an ambitious plan to import 1 million dairy cows between 2025 and 2028, aiming to significantly boost domestic milk production for President Prabowo Subianto’s free meals initiative. As part of a key election promise, the program is set to provide nutritious meals to 83 million Indonesians, requiring substantial increases in milk output.
Currently, Indonesia’s milk production stands at approximately 1 million tonnes per year, while national demand is projected to soar to 8.5 million tonnes by 2029.
The dairy cow imports, part of Indonesia’s strategy to enhance food security, will reduce dependence on international milk imports and expand the local dairy sector. Target sourcing countries include Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States, and Mexico.
