India and New Zealand Collaboration to Modernize Dairy Sector

India and New Zealand have signed a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that aims to bring significant changes to the Indian dairy industry. The agreement includes a specialized Agricultural Productivity Arrangement that focuses on modernizing the cooperative dairy sector in India by integrating advanced agricultural technologies from New Zealand.

Rudrendra Tandon, Secretary (East) at India's Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the importance of this partnership during a media briefing. He noted that India's dairy sector is built on a cooperative model, which is crucial for the financial well-being of small farmers and landless laborers who rely on daily milk production for income.

The collaboration will involve the exchange of sophisticated technical solutions across various agricultural activities. This initiative is aligned with the Indian government's policies to commercialize rural production and improve farm income levels. The integration of New Zealand's agrotech solutions is expected to enhance the quality and efficiency of dairy processing in India.

The formalization of this partnership took place during a state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to New Zealand. During the visit, both Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized the role of the FTA in eliminating trade barriers and fostering innovation. They also discussed the potential for New Zealand investments in the Indian market.

This partnership is seen as a step towards India's larger goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047, as outlined in its “Viksit Bharat” roadmap. The agreement is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving this by boosting the agricultural sector's productivity and sustainability.
