India and ADM Discuss Food-Processing Investment Opportunities
India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held talks in Chicago with Juan Ricardo Luciano, chairman of the board and chief executive of Archer Daniels Midland. The meeting covered the expansion of ADM’s presence in India and potential investment in food processing.
The discussions took place as the Indian government seeks to develop agricultural value chains and the wider food-processing system. The sector links farm production with processing, distribution and consumer markets, turning agricultural commodities into products with greater added value.
ADM operates internationally across agriculture and food-related supply chains. Its talks with the Indian government concerned possible expansion in a country with a substantial agricultural base, a large consumer market and developing infrastructure for agricultural and food-related businesses.
Investment and agricultural value chains
India’s agricultural economy includes the production of commodities, their movement from farms to markets and their conversion into processed goods. Modernising those links involves closer connections among farmers, processors, companies and consumers.
Food-processing investment is relevant to several stages of that chain, including the handling of agricultural products, processing capacity, distribution and access to consumer markets. The Indian government’s engagement with ADM forms part of a broader effort to attract international companies involved in agriculture, food processing and related value-added activities.
The meeting also placed ADM’s possible expansion within India’s broader development of its agricultural and food-processing ecosystem. The discussions did not announce a specific investment, project, financial commitment or timetable.
