India’s Dairy Revolution: MP Offers 33% Subsidy for Farmers

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is set to lead a dairy revolution with the launch of the Dr. Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana. This innovative welfare scheme provides up to a 33% subsidy for farmers establishing dairy units, aiming to substantially increase milk production.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower local farmers and enhance the state’s agribusiness landscape. The focus is on strengthening dairy economics at the grassroots level, with a commitment to boosting farmer incomes.

Under this scheme, dairy units with 25 milch animals will be established, each unit costing up to Rs 42 lakh. The plan is inclusive and available to eligible livestock rearers from all communities in Madhya Pradesh. Participants must be a minimum of 21 years old and have completed mandatory dairy farming training.

Financial assistance includes a 33% subsidy for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe participants and a 25% subsidy for others. This subsidy is delivered as a lump sum after a three-year lock-in period, with no interest charged on the subsidy amount, encouraging sustained engagement in dairy farming.

Selection for the program prioritizes farmers already supplying milk to registered unions and those on milk collection routes. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has outlined an ambitious goal to integrate 50% of villages into a structured milk collection network, facilitated by new cooperative societies.

This comprehensive approach positions Madhya Pradesh at the forefront of India’s dairy sector, providing a model for international initiatives focused on increasing milk production through farmer empowerment.
