Camel Milk Symposium Shines Light on Therapeutic Benefits and Economic Potential
Sarhad Dairy, also known as the Kutch District Milk Producers Union Limited, recently hosted a symposium dedicated to camel milk, uniting leaders fr om dairy cooperatives, academia, research, camel rearers, and medical professionals. The event aimed to explore the therapeutic benefits of camel milk and strategies for its widespread adoption. Organized in Kutch as part of the United Nations' International Year of Camelids celebrations, the symposium highlighted the significance of camel milk in health and nutrition.
Valamji Humble, Chairman of Sarhad Dairy, reflected on the journey of camel milk production, tracing back to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's encouragement in 2012. He noted the initial challenges faced by camel milk producers and the transformative impact of organizing them with the support of Sahjeevan and Maldhari organizations. Since then, Sarhad Dairy has pioneered the country's first automated camel milk processing plant, collecting around 5,000 liters of camel milk daily from 350 families. The milk is utilized in various products, including flavored milk, spray-dried milk powder, and chocolates, with ongoing efforts to develop cheese, fermented milk products, coffee mix, and other powders based on camel milk.
Humble expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his support and highlighted his visit to commission Sarhad Dairy's plant, wh ere camel milk ice cream is produced.
Amit Arora, the Collector of Kutch District, envisioned Kutch as the hub for camel milk, emphasizing its nutritional value and urging the medical community and researchers to position it as a healthy food supplement. He called for research initiatives to enhance productivity and improve the livelihoods of camel milk producers.
Sameer Saxena, Head of Quality Assurance and New Product Development at GCMMF, recalled the journey of camel milk procurement prices, which rose from Rs. 20-25 per liter to Rs. 52 per liter, thanks to Sarhad Dairy's efforts. This increase has incentivized more camel owners to engage in camel milking.
