Growth in agricultural production and the implementation of large-scale investment projects have enabled Kazakhstan to strengthen its position in food security. This was stated by Vice Minister of Agriculture Yerbol Taszhurekov at a briefing on June 25, according to Dairynews.today citing the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the first five months, food production in Kazakhstan increased by 10.5%, reaching 1.4 trillion tenge

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in the first five months of 2025, the gross agricultural output reached 1.3 trillion tenge, showing a 4% increase. In 2024, the country harvested a record grain crop of 26.7 million tons, which is 1.5 times higher than the previous year’s level. Significant growth was also recorded in other crops: rice +16%, buckwheat +42%, oilseeds +46%, and potatoes +40%.

Positive trends were also observed in animal husbandry. The cattle population grew by 23.4% to 9.6 million heads, small ruminants increased by 7.8% to 26.2 million, horses by 12.2% to 5 million, and poultry by 2.2% to 47.7 million.

Meat production (carcass weight) rose by 3%, reaching 409.1 thousand tons. Milk production increased by 7.5% to 1.3 million tons, and egg production grew by 200 million units to 1.8 billion units.

Processing and refining of agricultural raw materials also show steady growth. In five months, food production increased by 10.5%, totaling 1.4 trillion tenge. Particularly notable growth was seen in the sugar segment (13.7 times), vegetable and butter oils, meat, and flour products.

According to Yerbol Taszhurekov, by 2028 Kazakhstan plans to increase the processing of key agricultural products to 70% and raise food production output to 4.5 trillion tenge. Currently, self-sufficiency levels for key product categories range from 80% to 100%.

More than 670 investment projects totaling 3.3 trillion tenge are being implemented in the country, of which 197 projects focus on reducing import dependence. The total value of these projects amounts to 915 billion tenge.

The sugar industry remains a priority. In 2024, a record 1.2 million tons of sugar beet were sent for processing, resulting in a 62% increase in beet sugar production.

“Ensuring sustainable food sovereignty remains a key focus of the country’s agricultural policy,” emphasized Yerbol Taszhurekov, according to the ministry’s press service.
