IFF launches enzyme for dairy feed efficiency
Product designed for ruminant digestion
International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) has launched Omni-Bos PHY, a phytase enzyme intended for use in dairy cattle. The company says the product breaks down phytate, a compound in feed that can bind nutrients and limit their availability to animals.
IFF developed the enzyme specifically for ruminants and says it is designed to remain active in the digestive tract. The product is intended for use in concentrates, premixes and total mixed rations, with protein, phosphorus and minerals among the nutrients targeted.
Development and reported results
Phytase has been widely used in poultry and pig production, while its use in dairy cattle has been more limited. IFF said conventional phytase products were not developed specifically for the digestive conditions of ruminants.
During product development, IFF evaluated Omni-Bos PHY in several studies, including trials with lactating dairy cows. In one study, the enzyme lowered the amount of phytate remaining undigested in the abomasum by about 70% compared with a control diet. The company said the wider study programme examined nutrient utilization and feed efficiency.
Feed formulation and sustainability
IFF says the technology may help producers use more of the protein, phosphorus and minerals already present in feed. The company also said this could reduce reliance on supplemental phosphorus and protected amino acids, while allowing greater use of alternative protein sources. Feed is one of the largest operating costs for dairy producers.
According to IFF, more effective nutrient utilization may reduce nitrogen and phosphorus excretion and support efforts to limit nutrient losses from dairy production. The company noted that the practical effect of the product will depend on diet composition, farm management, animal performance and local feed prices. Its initial rollout covers the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.
