Holstein Foundation opens applications for inaugural Dairy Data Academy
The Holstein Foundation has opened applications for the inaugural Dairy Data Academy, an educational programme designed to train participants in the use of digital tools for dairy operations. The course will be hosted by the SmartHolstein Lab at Western Kentucky University (WKU) in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Students will study technologies used in modern dairy housing, including robotic milking and feeding equipment, wearable biometric devices and computer-vision systems. These systems record indicators such as cow movement, behaviour and rumination. The programme also covers data analysis, introductory programming and data visualisation, with exercises focused on assessing data quality and applying numerical information to herd-health and reproductive decisions.
The SmartHolstein Lab is operated through a research, development and demonstration partnership between Holstein Association USA and WKU’s Department of Agriculture and Food Science. The facility serves as a testing and demonstration site for agricultural-technology companies and academic researchers. Participants will work with sensor equipment and predictive-model systems in an operating dairy barn rather than studying the technologies only in a classroom.
Practical sessions will include the examination of farm-economics cases involving data-based management. The academy’s material addresses feed-conversion efficiency, labour allocation and the economics of milk production. The stated aim is to help participants turn information from several digital systems into decisions used in commercial herd management.
Eligibility extends beyond students following conventional animal-science or agronomy courses. Applications are open to undergraduates at accredited two-year or four-year colleges, universities and vocational programmes, as well as high-school graduates employed on working dairy farms. The foundation is also seeking applicants studying data science, software engineering, computer science and agricultural engineering.
Applications must be submitted by December 1st 2026. Selected participants must pay a $100 registration deposit. The foundation said the academy is intended to widen the pool of people able to manage internet-of-things systems and multiple data streams used in dairy production. It also identifies commercial dairy businesses, genetics companies and manufacturers of precision equipment among the sectors requiring such technical skills.
