Hohhot Becomes Global Dairy Capital with $44.2 Billion Revenue

Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China, was recently recognized as the global dairy capital by the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST). This recognition was announced during the World Dairy Industry Conference held in Hohhot. The city is home to two of the top ten dairy producers worldwide and has seen its industry revenue surpass 300 billion yuan ($44.2 billion) by 2025.

The city has a history of accolades in the dairy sector. In 2005, it was named the 'Dairy Capital of China,' and in 2023, it received the title of 'World Capital of Dairy Science and Technology.' These recognitions are attributed to the city's significant investments in applied research for dairy production.

Pavinee Chinachoti, elected president of IUFoST, highlighted the scientific advancements in Hohhot during her speech at the conference. She noted the collaboration between research centers and dairy companies, leading to advancements in high-efficiency hydrolyzed whey protein processing and environmentally friendly beta-casein extraction methods.

The city's commitment to science and industry collaboration has also improved its primary production. The quality and scale of dairy farms in the region are now considered among the best globally. Hohhot's mayor, He Haidong, emphasized proposals for sustainable global dairy chain development, focusing on making the sector more ecological, intelligent, inclusive, open, and safe.

International perspectives were also part of the conference discussions. Laurence Rycken, director-general of the International Dairy Federation, stated that the global dairy industry is transitioning from rapid expansion to a phase emphasizing quality, facing challenges such as climate change and supply chain disruptions. However, Rycken also noted opportunities in technological innovation, digitalization, and industrial integration, citing China as a key player in these advancements.
