Himachal Pradesh Government Enhances Support for Dairy Farmers

On January 5, 2026, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu chaired a meeting to review the functioning of Milkfed, the state's dairy federation. During the meeting, he announced a series of measures aimed at supporting dairy farmers in the region. This includes increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cow milk from Rs 32 to Rs 51 per litre and buffalo milk from Rs 47 to Rs 61 per litre.

The Chief Minister also directed the implementation of an online system to maintain milk procurement data across all milk plants. Additionally, the transportation subsidy on milk has been increased from Rs 1.50 to Rs 3 per litre, and a subsidy of Rs 3 per litre is provided to farmers who transport milk themselves to collection centres beyond two kilometres.

Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the importance of maintaining quality standards in Milkfed products and instructed that all essential posts in milk plants and the Federation be filled on priority. He also reviewed the construction work of the Dhangwar milk plant, which is expected to provide economic support to farmers in Kangra, Hamirpur, Chamba, and Una districts.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister called for a competitive market-oriented approach for Milkfed and highlighted the unique identity of Himachal's dairy products across the country. He also directed a review of all Milkfed milk bars and encouraged greater efficiency in marketing activities, suggesting that desi ghee could be marketed through the Himira platform.

Managing Director Rajesh Sharma presented various activities of the Federation, highlighting the efforts to improve Milkfed's operational efficiency and market presence.
