Henderson Dairy Recalls Raw Milk Due to Listeria Concerns

Henderson Dairy is recalling specific batches of its Farm Fresh Raw Milk due to potential Listeria contamination, as announced by New Zealand Food Safety's acting deputy director-general, Jenny Bishop.
Listeria is a foodborne bacterium that can cause illness, particularly serious for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, Bishop explained.
The affected products are:
1 litre Farm Fresh Raw Milk, batch code 240724, with use-by date 280724
1 litre Farm Fresh Raw Milk, batch code 260724, with use-by date 300724
Consumers are advised not to consume these products. "Return them to Henderson Dairy for a refund or dispose of them if returning is not possible," Bishop said.
Drinking raw milk carries inherent risks due to potential harmful bacteria that pasteurization would normally eliminate. Routine testing identified the contamination, and there have been no reports of illness associated with these batches.
Henderson Dairy is located at 926 Waipahi Highway, RD 1, in Gore, according to the MPI website.
Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, making it particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups. During pregnancy, it can cause miscarriage, premature labor, stillbirth, or infection in newborns. In healthy adults, it usually results in mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms appearing within a few days of consumption. For vulnerable groups, symptoms may take 2 to 3 weeks or longer to manifest.
New Zealand Food Safety will collaborate with Henderson Dairy to determine the cause of the contamination and prevent future occurrences.
