Heat Stress and Rest Impact Dairy Cow Productivity
Research conducted by INIA has highlighted that heat stress not only affects milk yield but also impacts physiological processes related to inflammation and metabolism in dairy cows. Trials involving shade and sprinkler systems demonstrated an increase of 5.7 kilograms of milk per day in newly calved cows, compared to those exposed to direct sunlight. In high-producing cows, the difference was 1.8 kilograms per day.
To mitigate the effects of potential heavy rainfall, La Manna advises identifying areas where cows can remain without sinking into mud, with firm access to food and water, and ideally a dry surface for resting. He suggests providing at least 120 square meters per cow, or rotating smaller areas of 30 square meters per animal, to prevent soil degradation.
Additionally, La Manna recommends maintaining drainage systems, avoiding abrupt dietary changes during extended rainy periods, and correcting any dips or uneven ground around feeding troughs.
Rest is another critical factor, with data indicating that cows need at least eight hours of rest daily. For each additional hour of rest, milk production increases by an average of 1.6 kilograms per day.
To enhance cow welfare and milk output, La Manna suggests minimizing unnecessary walking, conducting short grazing sessions in areas with adequate forage, and reinforcing hygiene during milking to reduce the risk of mastitis.
The overarching conclusion is clear: “The well-being of cows pays off,” both in terms of milk production and overall herd health, as emphasized by the specialist.
