Haryana Sanctions Rs 60.16 Crore for Ambala Dairy Hub

The Haryana government has approved capital funding for an integrated livestock complex in Brahmin Majra village. The project is intended to relocate dairy herds currently operating in congested residential areas and consolidate them at a site with dedicated animal-care, feeding, sanitation and milk-handling facilities.

The plan includes about 200 plots of different sizes for dairy owners. A veterinary hospital will operate around the clock and provide clinical treatment, vaccinations and emergency diagnostic services without charge. The complex will also have dry-fodder storage facilities and depots for concentrate feed. These services are designed for herds that include Murrah buffaloes and crossbred cows.

Waste-management infrastructure forms part of the development. Manure will be collected for processing in a central biogas plant using anaerobic digestion. The facility is expected to produce biogas for piped domestic distribution and bio-slurry for use as agricultural fertiliser. Other planned works include washing ponds for animals, effluent drainage, an electrical substation, LED lighting around the site and planted buffer areas.

The authorities are also retendering construction of a bridge over the Tangri river. The proposed crossing would connect Tangri Bandh road directly with the complex, providing an access route for fodder deliveries and livestock transport without sending those movements through inner-city roads.

Milk handling at the site will include a chilling plant. Producers will be able to cool milk to 4°C after morning and evening milking, while testing will cover fat and solids-not-fat content. The planned arrangements are intended to connect producers with commercial purchasers and dairy cooperatives, including the Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation, which operates under the Vita brand.

The relocation follows the expansion of Ambala around dairy operations associated with Gwal Mandi. The market was established during the British colonial period to supply milk to military personnel, but later urban growth surrounded the informal dairy businesses. The government’s announcement cited problems involving manure disposal, blocked drainage and public-health concerns as part of the background to the project.
