In a concerning trend, Germany witnessed a further decline in dairy consumption, as per government data released recently.

The data from the Bundesinformationszentrums Landwirtschaft (BZL) revealed that in 2023, the per capita consumption of milk in Germany dropped to less than 46kg, down from 46.1kg in 2022, which itself had marked a record low.
Simultaneously, the production of drinking milk experienced a nearly 1% decrease to approximately 4.2 million tons compared to the previous year.
Cheese consumption per person also registered a notable decline, slipping from 24.6kg to 23.8kg, marking a decrease of over 3%.
Despite these declines in domestic consumption, the production of cheese saw a marginal increase to 2.66 million tons in 2023 from 2.64 million tons in 2022, primarily attributed to a rise in exports.
This downturn in dairy consumption underscores ongoing challenges within the German dairy industry, prompting stakeholders to explore strategies to revitalize domestic demand and sustain competitiveness in international markets.
