Galician Dairy Farmers Face €14.5 Million Annual Loss Due to Price Gap with Spain
Farmers in Galicia, Spain’s leading milk-producing region, have long demanded fairer pricing, arguing that they earn significantly less per liter than counterparts elsewhere in the country. At a campaign launch in Lalín, agricultural union Unións Agrarias called for price adjustments to ensure the viability of local dairy farms, particularly in the Deza and Tabeirós-Montes regions.

Javier Iglesias and Óscar Pose, representatives of the union, highlighted that the region accounts for 14% of Galicia’s total milk production. Despite Galicia being a major player in Spain’s dairy industry and one of Europe’s top ten producing regions, its farmers remain at a financial disadvantage.

Each year, an estimated 350 to 370 dairy farms shut down across Galicia due to unsustainable pricing, with around 250 closures reported in Lalín alone and approximately 150 in both Silleda and Rodeiro.

“We are not asking for higher prices than the rest of Spain—just equal treatment,” Unións Agrarias stated.
