Gaffney Family Cattle Joins Dairy Rally 2025 as a Showcase of Family Farming and Innovation
Could you tell us a little about Gaffney Family Cattle and its history?
We are located in southwest Wisconsin, an area rich in agriculture — from dairy and beef to specialty crops like potatoes, sweet corn, and even fish farming. Our farm sits on a ridge line, perfectly suited for grazing beef cattle. Over the past 30 years, we’ve evolved to survive and grow, building Gaffney Family Cattle into a business that raises cattle with eye appeal, genomic potential, and real-world performance. Today, three generations of the Gaffney family are actively involved, with our children carrying forward the legacy as sixth-generation farmers.
Your farm has a reputation for early adoption of technology. Can you share some examples?
We’ve always believed in staying ahead. Our kids were collecting DNA samples before they could even read chapter books. We introduced the first video sale ring in Wisconsin and, together with Vytelle, brought the first non-stimulated IVF opportunity to the state. Since 2020, we’ve worked with over 2,000 donors and produced more than 10,000 embryos, with dairy cattle making up the majority.
What does the farm look like today in terms of scale and activities?
We manage around 150 cows and 800 acres, with income sources ranging from our annual bull and female sale to private treaty sales, crop production, custom cropping, and even short-term rentals. Each year we strive to do something new — whether that’s improving vaccination programs, adopting new equipment, or exploring fresh management strategies.
