FSSAI Issues Notices to Multiple Companies Over Consumer Complaints
The Food and Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken action against several food business operators (FBOs) for allegedly violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Notices have been issued to companies such as Bikanervala, Marico Ltd, and Param Dairy, among others, addressing issues ranging from misleading product claims to hygiene violations.
Bikanervala was addressed due to a consumer complaint regarding alleged hygiene concerns at its food service and kitchen premises. A social media post claimed that a staff member was seen consuming food in the service area during operational hours, prompting FSSAI to demand details of the investigation and corrective measures implemented by the company. Bikanervala is required to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) detailing actions against the personnel involved if the allegations are confirmed.
Param Dairy received a notice following a consumer complaint about fungal contamination in 'Dahi' and 'Rabri' supplied through IRCTC catering services. The dairy company must provide information on inventory management practices to prevent the sale of expired products and submit an ATR highlighting corrective actions and measures taken against responsible entities.
Marico Ltd was notified regarding its product 'Saffola Total Heart Pro-Multi Source Cooking Oil'. FSSAI expressed concern that the use of the term "Heart Pro" and related imagery could mislead consumers about the product's health benefits. The company is required to substantiate claims such as "Good Fats Balance" and "Losorb for less oil absorption" scientifically.
Additionally, Ferrero India Pvt Ltd's product Kinder Joy was flagged for potentially misleading claims about being "Rich in Milk Solids". Notices were also issued to other brands, including Medizen Labs, MasterChow Foods, Raw Pressery, Nexa Industries, and more, for various compliance issues.
FSSAI's actions reflect its commitment to ensuring that food business operators adhere to safety and labeling standards, protecting consumer interests and maintaining transparency in the food industry.
