FSSAI Finds Nestle India's Dairy Whitener Unsafe at Hotel Lalit
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said on October 3 that the sample was taken from the premises of Bharat Hotels Ltd, the operator of The Lalit in Connaught Place, New Delhi. The product was identified as a low-fat dairy whitener manufactured by Nestle India.
According to the regulator, a food analyst’s laboratory examined the sample and described it as “substandard” and “unsafe”. FSSAI said the finding indicated that the product did not comply with requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The regulator announced the laboratory result in a social-media post. It said a copy of the analysis had been supplied to the food business operator for reference and for the action considered necessary in response to the report.
FSSAI also said it had issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd concerning the non-compliant product. The company was given the opportunity to challenge the analyst’s findings under the applicable provision of the 2006 law and within the prescribed period.
In addition, the food business operator was instructed to halt sales of the identified product immediately. The regulator did not provide details of the laboratory parameters, the sample’s quantity, or any reported illness in its statement.
The action concerns a sample obtained at the hotel rather than a broader product recall announced in the statement. The regulator’s notice and the appeal process were described in connection with the laboratory classification and the requirements of the FSS Act, 2006.
