Farmers in southwestern France have escalated their protests by blocking all access roads to the Port of Bordeaux on Thursday, as tensions continue to rise within the country’s agricultural sector. The port, which serves as a key gateway to the Atlantic via the Garonne River, also houses a significant grains terminal.

According to Jose Perez, a local representative from the Coordination Rurale union, the farmers—driving tractors—are demanding answers from the French government, which has yet to address their concerns. "We will stay here because we still don't have answers," Perez stated.

The protest is part of broader discontent among French farmers, many of whom argue that the port symbolizes the unfair competition posed by foreign agricultural producers, who they say are not subject to the same regulatory standards.

The protest comes amid growing frustration over multiple issues, including the European Union's ongoing trade negotiations with Latin American countries, which have reignited anger over what farmers perceive as inadequate safeguards. This dissatisfaction follows a series of challenges, including rain-damaged harvests, livestock disease outbreaks, and a delayed election that has postponed promised government support measures.

While the port operator did not immediately respond to requests for comment, a spokesperson from the local prefecture overseeing security stated that the protests had not yet disrupted port operations. "For now, we're just talking," the spokesperson said, adding that there were no immediate plans for police intervention.
