Fonterra's new UHT cream plant at Edendale in Southland is set to enhance the local economy and meet increasing demand in Asian markets. The facility will feature one operational line initially, with potential expansion to four, employing 70 individuals by its opening in August 2026.

Fonterra’s regional GM, Andrew Johns, highlights the strategic decision to diversify Fonterra's production across New Zealand’s islands, maximizing efficiency and supporting local workforce development.

The initiative is part of the company's response to a growing trend towards UHT products in Asia, noted for their profitable margin and expected 4% annual growth over the next seven years.

The construction phase, already underway, involves 150 contractors mainly from the Southland area, with some international expertise assisting with European machinery installations.

The new plant will primarily produce Anchor Whipping Cream, a key ingredient in China’s 260 million annually baked cakes, valued for its extended stability and appeal in culinary applications.
