Fonterra's New CEO Focuses on Growth and Milk Supply Expansion
Richard Allen has assumed the role of CEO at Fonterra, taking charge during a critical phase of the cooperative's evolution. Having joined Fonterra in 2008, Allen brings a wealth of experience from various senior roles in global markets such as Shanghai and Chicago. His leadership tenure in China was marked by rapid expansion, which he aims to replicate on a broader scale.
Under Allen's leadership, Fonterra aims to sustain its financial recovery achieved through asset divestments and a focus on ingredients and foodservice sectors. He plans to leverage his international market insights to ensure Fonterra's competitiveness by addressing changing consumer demands and geopolitical challenges.
A key focus for Allen will be to defend and expand Fonterra's milk supply base. The cooperative faces intensified competition from rival processors like Open Country Dairy and Olam Food Ingredients. Allen intends to enhance farmer retention and milk recruitment through sustainable pricing and cooperative ownership benefits.
Allen also highlighted plans for future investments concentrated in New Zealand, including upgrades to dairy processing facilities and projects in advanced protein and UHT cream production. Emphasizing innovation, he pointed to automation and AI as potential growth areas.
