Fonterra is expanding its Edendale plant in Southland, New Zealand, with a $150 million investment to triple its ultra-high temperature (UHT) cream production capacity.

This move aims to meet the growing demand for premium products like Anchor whipping cream in Asian markets. Initially, the facility will process over 50 million litres of UHT cream annually, with a potential capacity to exceed 100 million litres by 2030. The construction, which began in January, involves tripling the workforce to 150 contractors. The expansion is expected to enhance Fonterra's manufacturing capabilities and secure its supply of high-value, long-life dairy products. The project is on track for its first products to be available by August next year, aligning with the pressing demand in the lucrative Asian foodservice sector, where UHT cream's extended shelf-life offers a competitive edge.
