Fonterra is set to close its Hamilton canning and packaging facility by the end of July to focus on higher-value products.

Fonterra has announced its decision to shut down its canning and packaging facility in Hamilton by the end of July. This move comes as the co-operative aims to concentrate on higher value products, such as advanced proteins and medical nutrition.
The Canpac facility, which currently blends and packages milk powders, faces closure due to low product volumes and increasing production complexities, notes Fonterra's Chief Operating Officer, Anna Palairet. She mentioned, "It's been a tough day for all the team at the site. Making decisions like this is never easy.
Our strategy is about creating end-to-end value and growing total returns for our farmer shareholders." With around 120 employees affected by the closure, Fonterra plans to offer support through a consultation process, potentially exploring redeployment opportunities. The site, which packs up to 4000 metric tonnes of powder annually, represents less than one percent of Fonterra's total product volume.
