Fonterra Expands Its European Footprint with Strategic Dairy Production
The Heerenveen facility, established in 2014 as part of a 50:50 joint venture with Dutch cheese producer A-Ware, is a key asset in Fonterra’s European operations. A-Ware, responsible for sourcing and transporting the milk, integrates its processes with Fonterra's production. The excess liquid whey fr om A-Ware's cheese-making is seamlessly transferred to Fonterra, wh ere it is transformed into high-demand protein powder and lactose products for distribution across Europe.

Callum Lott, Fonterra’s manager for trade strategy, sustainability, and stakeholder affairs for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, emphasized the significance of the partnership. “This collaboration allows us to leverage A-Ware’s local supply chains and processing capabilities, while maximizing value from the by-products of the cheese-making process.”

In addition to whey products, the joint venture also produces UHT cream, which finds its market in China and Southeast Asia, underscoring Fonterra’s global reach and diversified market strategy.

Fonterra’s regional office in Amsterdam, staffed by 67 professionals, plays a crucial role in managing operations and strengthening the company’s presence across Europe. This European expansion aligns with Fonterra’s broader strategy of enhancing its value-added product offerings and securing a stronger foothold in key international markets.
